A one-person production line
You're female. 32 years of age. In a communications role, pretty much by yourself, with very little support or training. But lots of expectation around quality of output. In need of professional development, you’re our ideal client. You work in an open plan office, next to your boss, who reports to the Board or Management Team for your area of the business. Your desktop is cluttered with projects on the go. Without you, these projects just won’t happen. Your job is to make sure they do.
Sitting between management and technicians, yours can feel like a lonely place to be. One minute you’re cajoling expert content providers to deliver on time. The next, you’re dealing with designers who struggle to follow the brand guidelines. If you’re lucky enough to have brand guidelines, that is. Not that anybody really understands how to use them. Yourself included, if you’re honest about it.
You are a Communications Manager
Others see you as the owner of the team’s communications calendar. You tend to see yourself as a project production line. Certainly not as a business writer, even though you spend at least half your time editing other people’s inconsistent and mediocre work.
This just doesn’t feel like Communications.
If only you could stop the roundabout and get proper communications thinking in at the start of the project, instead of at the end, when it’s too late. You could coach your content providers to be more self-sufficient. But there’s too little time and the calendar won’t wait. Neither will the management team.
